History

Santa Cruz school treasures more than 160 years of historical reminiscence. It is considered as the first school in Kerala, started by the Diocese of Cochin in 1858 with the modern facilities of the time. The school was then named St. Joseph’s school and was situated in the eastern side of Nehru Park of the old Santa Cruz Church. This towering beam of light was renovated in Gothic Style and upgraded in 1888 to High School. The school had special facilities with imported lab equipments from Europe installed in the Laboratories and the library was enriched with precious books. As a tribute to God, a Chapel was set up inside the school building, An altar with splendid artistic work adorned the chapel. Holy mass was celebrated on Fridays and special occasions for the teachers and students. A fountain functioning in gravity force offers a vibrant substance of craftsmanship. The European architectural brilliance is worth watching.

The silver Jubilee year celebration of the school was marked with the establishment of a Monument, a wartime memorial. This tall, beautiful monument is another perfect display of the structural triumph of European architecture. The war memorial is dedicated to the soldiers who died during the first world war. It symbolizes the peace after war and the memory of eternal and immortal soldiers. On the top of the monument there is the statue of sacred heart showering blessing to those who are entering the school campus. The magnificent paintings and the structural beauty of this monument offers a historical delight for the tourists. This temple of knowledge was again upgraded in the year 2000 to a Higher Secondary School. In the pursuit of imparting and installing wisdom, Santa Cruz School still remains as a wonder of all time.
